St. Patrick’s Day Foot Race and Leprechaun Dash

March 15, 2008

James-Clan “Lame-ricks”

There once was a family named James,

Who went to the Tri-Cities to race.

Aaron did a dash,

and Sarah didn’t crash,

and Barry has a big smile on his face.

There once was a runner from Kennewick,

Whose young legs used to carry him quick.

But now that he’s aged,

And his times do not rage

Seeing old friends did the trick.

Blue skies and blustery spring wind greeted runners at the 27th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Foot Race on March 15th in Kennewick.  In spite of the chilly gusts and low 50 degree temps, 425 runners competed in the five and 10 kilometer distances.

The kids’ one-mile Leprechaun Dash was the neatest race (at least in my opinion) as it featured more than 200 kiddos running, skipping, laughing and having a blast!  It was an awesome sight!

Hard Core Runners’ Club members had some noteworthy performances, particularly from “Wild Bill” Leahy.  The 65 year-old Leahy torched the 5k course in 20:13, winning his age group and finishing 6th overall.  That’s a 6:30 pace…amazing!

HCR’s Jill Banister from Pendleton was 2nd overall in the woman’s 10K.  In the men’s 10K, Crisprin Garza, Rob Bartol , and Cliff Banister finished in 39:25, 39:59 and 40:39 respectively.

In the woman’s 5K, Sarah James finished fourth in the 40-49, and Barry James finished second overall in a time of 18:28.

Venturing to the Tri-Cities to touch-bases with old friends and former competitors was well worth the hour and a half trip.  Already, I am looking forward to next year’s event.
