Popular races in Yakima: Yakima River Canyon, Cowiche Canyon, and the basalt benches above town. Each route is chosen for honest climbs, fast views, and easy parking. Surfaces range from crushed gravel and farm roads to quiet asphalt with wide shoulders.
Yakima River Canyon 10 Miler: A point-to-point that follows the canyon road past tall walls and the river's bends. Expect steady rollers, two short climbs, and tailwind chances when the valley warms. Aid every two miles; cutoff set for generous finish windows.
Gray Rock Ridge Half Marathon: Starting near the Cowiche trailhead and climbing to the ridge. The first five miles are singletrack with sage and loose rock, then a fire road traverse and a quick descent. Total climb near 1,800 feet. Poles allowed; cups optional to reduce waste.
Tieton Valley Twilight 5K: A loop on farm lanes with long straightaways and open sky. Flat and fast. Families line the route with sprinklers and cowbells. Great first race for new members and a tune-up for fall goals.
Naches Peak 25K: An alpine tour at the pass. Mixed dirt and compact pumice, lakeside views, and a ridge section with exposure to wind. Carry a layer and 1 liter of water. Course marks appear every half mile and junctions are marshaled.
Downtown Yakima Turkey 8K: A city course with brisk temps, coffee at the start, and a last mile that nudges uphill toward the finish banner. Strollers welcome in the back wave. Food bank donations earn raffle tickets for local shop gift cards.
